Everything is constantly changing, although we don’t always realize it. All things, no matter how solid and immobile they may seem, are moving. I pay attention to that fluidity through my artwork. My work is concerned with transitions and transformation. I capture materials as they begin to change from one state to another. In several of my pieces I document ink as it begins to run, colors when they bleed together, drips and drops as gravity moves them. I am interested in disintegration, and deterioration as a means of destroying one thing while creating another.
In some of my drawings I create images from snapshots, then use liquid to dissolve the figures. What was captured in the photograph is released and dispersed in a pool water. In my site specific work I emphasize cracks and imperfections in the architecture to draw attention to the shift that has occurred since the space was created. I collect flowers, dirt, dust and other things that are changing around me. I use those materials in my art and change them again. I have always lived with the fantasy that someday everything will be fixed, stable, and perfect. Happily ever after. I feel the more I can come to terms with the fact that all things are always in flux, the more I can accept that change is dynamic, important, inevitable, and good. — Erin Dengerink |
